No-Sick Matcha Latte


Matcha is cool and all. But, it could be better. I'm into the floral notes and creaminess of matcha. I'm also into the amino acid and antioxidant profiles of matcha that can help fight certain cancers and soothe a stressed-out soul (I'm talking about EGCG and L-theanine). So, to make matcha even better at elevating the bounds of wellness, I add in 2 classical Chinese Medicine herbs into my matcha latte to promote immune function and energy.


But, first... science.

Lets talk about matcha before diving into the Chinese herbal goodness. What is there to talk about? Seasonality. The season in which your matcha was harvested will make a big difference on your health and wellness. Studies show that spring-harvested matcha has higher stress-soothing amino acids (L-theanine) and autumn-harvested matcha has higher immune-boosting antioxidants (caffeine and EGCG). So, depending on your overall health goals, pick and choose your matcha according to seasonality. Remember, not all matcha are the same!

The first Chinese herb is Chaga (aka Inonotus obliquus, aka Hou Tou gu). Chaga is a functional mushroom that has been shown to fight viruses (from herpes to hepatitis) and promote immune function by supporting gut health. How is all of this done? The sugars in Chaga make this mushroom an important immune stimulator since they basically act as food for beneficial bacteria in the gut. When good bacteria flourish, bad bacteria are crowded out and good bacteria send out proteins and hormones that make us happy and healthy.

The second Chinese herb is Astragalus membranaceus root (aka Huang qi). Astragalus is another immune booster classically used in Chinese Medicine formula used for a variety of conditions - colds, flus, and gut infections. Much like Chaga, research shows that the sugars in the Astragalus root increase immune activity and promote gut health.

As an added plus, both of these herbs act as adaptogens in animal models. What's an adaptogen? They basically herbs that help increase stamina during times of stress. So, if you're stressed out, this matcha latte will help you through it while also making sure your immune system is working well.



No-Sick Matcha Latte Recipe

Recipe yield:

One 8-ounce drink



1/2 teaspoon CAP Beauty The Matcha

3 oz warm water

8 oz So Delicious Dairy Free Unsweetened Coconut Milk

1/2 teaspoon Jing Herbs Chaga Powder

1 teaspoon Jing Herbs Astralagus Powder

1 teaspoon Lakanto Monk Fruit sweetener



• In 3 oz of warm water, add in the matcha and whisk with a bamboo whisk. Whisk until smooth and creamy-looking. Set aside.

• In a blender, pour coconut milk, chaga powder, astralagus powder, and monk fruit sweetener. Blend until frothy.

• Pour blended herbal mixture in a glass mug, then gently add in matcha over the blended herbal mixture so that you can see distinct layers.

• Serve. Gram. Sip. Relax.
